Gaia-X is a European initiative aimed at developing a common data infrastructure. It provides standards and tools to create interoperable data spaces, allowing participants to exchange information securely and with confidence while maintaining control. At the heart of this ecosystem, the "clearing houses" (GXDCH: GAIA-X Digital Clearing House) play a crucial role in acknowledging certification levels. Orange, as a founding member of Gaia-X, alongside other European companies, actively participates in their development to promote European digital sovereignty.
As a founding member of Gaia-X, Orange is a key player in securing and enhancing the value of data in Europe. The Group has a long-standing experience in this field, dating back to the creation of the GIE Carte Bleue in 1985.
Trust: the foundation of data ecosystems
The European digital ecosystem is undergoing major upheavals, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence. In response, the European Union has established regulations such as the DATA Act, the AI Act and the Digital Services Act, aimed at promoting digital development based on transparency and trust.
Launched in 2020, Gaia-X aims to establish a sovereign, secure and interoperable European data-sharing ecosystem. Companies can thus benefit from data managed according to European standards. To ensure trust between data producers and consumers, digital infrastructures must be evaluated according to common criteria. Gaia-X proposes a compliance standard and three Levels of Labels, corresponding to various degrees of compliance regarding transparency, data protection and security.
Clearing houses: trusted intermediaries for new business models
The GAIA-X clearing houses (GXDCH), hosted in several clouds and developed on an open-source model, are essential to Gaia-X. They ensure compliance with established criteria, accrediting and validating the compliance of data exchange services or a cloud service provider by issuing a certificate of compliance for a specified period. Like clearing houses, GAIA-X's various frameworks and tools encourage the emergence of new business models, such as marketplaces and data spaces, by enabling fluid and transparent interactions. For Nassima Auvray, Digital Trust Director at Orange Business: “GXDCHs are one of the key elements in the process of building trusted digital environments in Europe for data sharing. As part of the Orange Business value proposition, they enable us to be a key partner for companies operating within the GAIA-X ecosystem.”
TEMS: a dataspace for the media sector
As part of GAIA-X, TEMS (Trusted European Media Data Space) is an intermediation platform dedicated to the media sector. Orange contributes to the project by developing digital identity components with Live Identity Wallet and AI-based APIs. TEMS, a collaborative initiative involving 42 organizations from 12 countries, aims to transform how the media sector shares data and derives value from it, while respecting intellectual property and personal data confidentiality. It thus seeks to contribute to the economic development and growth of local and regional media ecosystems across Europe.
